The College of Indigenous Studies is co-hosting a monthly speaker series with the International Arctic Research Center highlighting collaborative approaches to research, education and real-life community-based practices in rural Alaska.

Meet the Speakers:

Malinda Chase is Director of the Association of interior Native Educators, Co-Investigator of the Arctic and Earth STEM Integration of GLOBE and NASA assets (SIGNs) project, a Tribal Liaison at the ºÚÁÏÉçappClimate Adaptation Science Center, a Land Manager at her Native Village of Anvik, and a trained GLOBE educator. Malinda’s areas of expertise include boundary spanning/co-production of science, climate adaptation, Indigenous studies, science education and social science.
Hilary Shook is the program coordinator for the ºÚÁÏÉçappFire Science Consortium.  She is passionate about connecting wildland fire practitioners with scientific researchers to better inform their response to wildland fire, and how emergency response resources are supported in their work.  She has over 15 years experience in wildland fire coordination.  She received her MPA in 2017.  Hilary moved to ºÚÁÏÉçappin 2009 and lives in Fairbanks with her husband.
Elena B. Sparrow is a Research Professor of soil microbiology and science education and Co-director of Education and Outreach at the International Arctic Research Center at the University of ºÚÁÏÉçappFairbanks (UAF), Founder and Co-coordinator  of the UAF ºÚÁÏÉçappGlobal Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Partnership, Principal Investigator of the Arctic and Earth STEM Integration of GLOBE and NASA assets (SIGNs) project that braids Indigenous and western science in engaging educators, youth and community members in climate learning and action, and Co-investigator of the NASA Science Activation STEM Learning Ecosystems project at Arizona State University.
Katie V. Spellman is a Research Associate Professor of ecology, science education and vegetation  and Co-director of Education and Outreach at the International Arctic Research Center at the ºÚÁÏÉçapp (UAF), an Associate Professor of Natural Resources and Environment at the UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics, a Climate Scholar Program Faculty Fellow at the UAF Honors College, and Co-coordinator of the UAF Alaska GLOBE Partnership. She is an expert in Alaska’s wild berries, invasive plants, community and public engagement in science, and climate change education.

The College of Indigenous Studies and International Arctic Research Center present a new research speaker series: A Place for Knowledge Exchange

The College of Indigenous Studies (CIS) and the (IARC) co-host this virtual seminar series, with monthly conversations covering collaborative approaches to research, education, and real-life community-based practices in rural Alaska. 

 

Future seminar topics include co-stewardship, co-production of knowledge, climate impacts on traditional ways of life, food and water security, fisheries, and much more. 

 

As part of A Place for Knowledge Exchange, CIS and  will hold one collaboration brunch each semester for those interested in connecting with the two organizations and other members of the UAF community. The location of these collaboration brunches will rotate between CIS and IARC facilities.
