Ergonomics

Ergonomics is about fitting the workstation to the individual - not the other way around.  Ergonomically designed furniture and correct workstation posture can reduce pain and injury and increase productivity. Departments are encouraged to request ergonomic evaluations for their employees if the need arises. 

Risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders, or MSD's, include lifting, bending, reaching, pushing and pulling, or working in awkward body postures.  Repetitive motion, vibration, and heat/cold also can contribute to ergonomic injuries.  

EHSRM can assist with ergonomic assessments of workstations and other work-related activities.  The first step is to complete the .  Then, if needed, schedule an in-person consultation with the EHSRM Ergonomics Specialist, Bethany Pitts.  Purchasing of equipment recommended in the evaluation will be made by the employee's department.  In some cases, Loss Prevention funding may be available; however, this is not a guarantee.
